Rest assured, there’s no in between when forecasting Peppers’ future, even if that middle ground might help figure out what’s next for the former Michigan standout and Heisman Trophy finalist.
That’s the problem. It must be a “boom or bust” verdict with Peppers, and the show hasn’t even started yet. Both sides latch on to one thing and become entrenched, and that continued after his double-dip performance as a linebacker and safety at the NFL Combine. For all the labels, Peppers knows the one he wants at the next level.
During Prescott’s rookie season, the combined 2015 winning percentage of the Cowboys’ 2016 opponents was .465, tied for 27th in the NFL. This year, in one of the league’s most competitive divisions while also facing the NFC West and AFC West, it jumps up to 10th, at .531. The Cowboys will face five of the top dozen pass defenses from 2016, and that doesn’t include much-improved units for the Chiefs, Chargers, Eagles and Redskins.
Led by No. 1 in that category, the Broncos, Prescott will see more ramped-up 3-4 defenses with daunting pass rushers and confusing coverage schemes. The NFC North and AFC North last year provided few tests in that regard.
There’s a lot to chew on there about a man who’s been deemed toxic by a league that recently drafted a cornerback under rape investigation and multiple players who have beaten women. Even the notion that Kaepernick prefers working in the community to fighting upstream Cheap Atlanta Braves Jerseys to get back into the NFL sounds less like another excuse not to sign him, and more like simple surrender to reality as time goes by.
